Full-Time Civic Engagement Coordinator (Contract-Maytree)

The Federation of Metro Tenants' Associations is hiring for a
PERMANENT FULL-TIME CIVIC ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR CONTRACT (Maytree)
Hours of Work: 35 hours / week
Start Date: April 2025 (exact date TBD)
Status of Employment: Full-Time (9 month contract with possibility of
extension)
Reports To: Executive Director
Vacation Entitlement: 3 weeks per year in the first three years of
employment;
4 weeks per year in the fourth, fifth and sixth year of employment;
5 weeks per year in the seventh and subsequent years of employment
Pro-rated for part-time employment
Sick Day Entitlement: 24 days per year (Pro-rated for 9-month contract)
Base Salary: $44,816/yr (in negotiations)
Objectives of the Position:
1) To help connect tenant leaders and volunteers to FMTA initiatives and tenant resources.
2) To organize monthly Tenant Action Committee (TAC) meetings with the tenant and housing sector, under the direction of the Executive Director.
3) To coordinate and train volunteers on FMTA’s mission and goals, through an Anti-Oppressive lens.
4) To assist civic engagement of members.
5) To assist with coordination and administration of the FMTA’s client and member relations management (CRM) systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Civic Engagement
● Develop and implement strategies to engage tenants in civic processes at all levels of government, including local elections, public consultations, and community organizing.
● Build and maintain relationships with tenant groups, community organizations, and other stakeholders.
● Host FMTA initiatives to educate tenants on their rights, housing policies and opportunities for civic engagement.
Sectoral Organizing
● Plan and organize ongoing monthly meetings for tenant leaders, members with lived experience and active agencies in the housing and tenant sector.
● Coordinate meeting logistics, outreach to groups, group agenda setting, meeting facilitation, troubleshooting and leadership development.
● Collaborate with staff, tenant groups and community groups to build advocacy and education campaigns focused on tenant rights and affordable housing.
● Support volunteers and members develop advocacy skills and take collective action.
● Promote membership in the FMTA and educate members on tenant rights through outreach materials, including brochures, fact sheets, flyers (etc.)
Internal Relations
● Work collaboratively with FMTA staff team to establish contacts and opportunities for civic engagement.
● Prepare reports and updated for funders and stakeholders.
● Engage FMTA volunteers in civic engagement and engaging tenants in FMTA volunteer programs
● Assisting with the coordination and administration of FMTA’s client and member relations management (CRM) system
Reporting and Evaluation
● Track and evaluate program outcomes to measure effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
● Maintain an organized database of contacts, activities and community networks.
● Generate and provide reports where needed
Qualifications
● Post-secondary education in community development, social work, sociology or related field or equivalent professional experience is preferred.
● Experience in community organizing, advocacy or civic engagement, preferably in the housing sector or social justice context.
● Knowledge of City of Toronto by-laws and regulations related to the housing sector is a strong asset.
● Fluency in languages other an English is a strong asset.
● An integral and dedicated commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression.
