Are you interested in joining our Board?

The FMTA is seeking new Board members to fill current vacancies. Ideal candidates possess a deep understanding of issues tenants are facing in the GTA, a passion for social justice, a commitment to grassroots organizing, and have the skills and expertise to join a Board. This is a volunteer Board of Directors.

In order to join the Board, applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements and must be a member in good standing.

Key Responsibilities of Board Members:

  • Provide strategic leadership for FMTA's advocacy work and campaigns.
  • Attend monthly Board meetings.
  • Active participation in Board projects and on committees.
  • Support the FMTA's mandate of advocating for better rights for tenants.
  • Working collaboratively with Board members and staff.
  • A commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership in tenant advocacy, community organizing, or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of tenants’ rights and relevant legislation.
  • Knowledge of issues facing tenants in the GTA.
  • Excellent communication, advocacy, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Experience and skills in one or more of the following areas:
    • Human resources and labor relations
    • Governance and policy development
    • Financial administration and accounting
    • Fundraising
    • Community engagement and stakeholder relations
    • Legal expertise
    • Communications

FMTA Purpose Statement Per Section 5 of the Constitution:

The corporation shall be a federation of tenants’ associations, individual tenants, individual members of residential, non-profit co-operatives, Honourary Supporters and Associate Members, united in pursuit of the following goals:

a) To organize and encourage the organization of tenants and provide a forum for engagement, communication, networking, and sharing of knowledge and experience;

b) To educate tenants and the general public about issues concerning tenants and housing policy;

c) To provide information, advice and other assistance to tenants;

d) To further the interests of tenants by lobbying and otherwise campaigning for tenants’ protection in the laws;

e) To promote decent and affordable housing as the right of all Canadians and residents; and

f) To provide a forum for tenants’ associations to meet and engage with each other.

Membership and Director Eligibility, Per Bylaw #1 Article 2(b):

(b) The following individuals are not eligible for membership:

(i) Owners or managers of rental residential property;

(ii) The spouse, common-law or domestic partner of owners or managers of rental residential property;

(iii) The parents, children and siblings of a person named in paragraphs (a) or (b), unless the prospective member can demonstrate that they have no financial or personal interest, either direct or by way of inheritance, in the rental residential property; and

(iv) The employees and agents of owners or managers of rental residential property.

Director Eligibility Under The Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010:

S.23 (1) The following persons are disqualified from being a director of a corporation:

  1. A person who is not an individual.
  2. A person who is under 18 years old.
  3. A person who has been found under the Substitute Decisions Act, 1992 or under the Mental Health Act to be incapable of managing property.
  4. A person who has been found to be incapable by any court in Canada or elsewhere.
  5. A person who has the status of bankrupt.
