The Federation of Metro Tenants' Associations (FMTA) is a non-profit Organization which advocates for better rights for Tenants. Founded in 1974, we are the oldest and largest Tenant Federation in Canada. The FMTA is comprised of affiliated Tenant Associations and of individual Members. We have over 3,000 members and continue to grow.

FMTA Fundraiser a smashing success

The first annual FMTA fundraiser this May at the Ramada Inn was a smashing success. Close to $5000 was raised and over 80 people attended including FMTA members, tenant activists, City Councilors and MPP's. The FMTA would like to thank all our friends and allies in the community who came out and showed their support.


Walmer Road Tenants Win Smart Meter Case

After a long drawn out battle with the lawyer for Briar Lane, tenants have won a substantial victory.  The Board ruled that the landlord could not unilaterally switch tenants to paying their own hydro from what the Board called "the landlords third party service provider".

Landlord and Tenant Board Telephone Hearings Halted

The FMTA, Advocacy Centre for Tenants of Ontario (ACTO) and the Tenant Duty Counsel Program scored a victory this month when the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) halted telephone hearings in the Southwest region of Ontario.

Provincial Government Consultations on Affordable Housing

The Ontario government has launched a series of consultations across the province. The government is promising to develop a comprehensive plan to ensure everyone has "adequate, suitable and affordable housing." Although this is a rather grand claim, these consultations are an opportunity for all tenants across the province to tell the government what is important to us.

Government Announces Rent Increase Guideline of 2.1%

Today, the Government of Ontario announced the 2010 rent guideline at 2.1%. This is shocking considering the tough economic times that we are in.

The guideline is based on the average inflation for the last 12 month period. Recent reports of lower inflation gave us hope that the guideline would be lowered, not raised.
