You can't shelter in place if you don't have a home. Ontario is tightening restrictions across the province, but the government is dragging its heels on reinstating real eviction ban that tenants have been asking for months. The thousands of tenants facing eviction due to job loss and health challenges as a result of the pandemic need more than a temporary ban on sheriff enforcement. Tenants need rent relief and stability to be able to get through the pandemic.
The Landlord and Tenant Board is a disaster, with many tenants being evicted without even knowing that they had a hearing, or getting to talk to a lawyer. Homeless encampments are growing while landlords continue to see increasing profits. The CERB has run out and evictions are contributing to the spread of COVID.
We demand that the Government of Ontario, Doug Ford, and housing minister Steve Clark:
- Immediately halt all evictions and reinstate the provincial eviction moratorium, and
- Postpone all eviction hearings at the Landlord and Tenant Board.
