Who We Are
The Federation of Metro Tenants' Associations (FMTA) is a non-profit organization which advocates for better rights for tenants.
Founded in 1974, we are the oldest and largest Tenant Federation in Canada. The FMTA is comprised of affiliated Tenant Associations and of individual members. We have over 3,000 members and continue to grow.
What We Do
Inform and Educate Tenants
- Our Tenant Infohub answers specific questions via telephone, email and social media about your rights or options under the law (we are unable to provide legal advice)
- Our publications and resources for tenants are available on our Resources page. We have recently produced online and PDF versions of the Tenant Survival Manual and Guide to Tenant Rights in 12 languages! Both are Funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario.
- Our Outreach & Organizing Team offers a wide variety of workshops on tenant rights, above guideline rent increases, evictions, landlords removing services and maintenance. They can also refer you to City-funded legal services for advice or representation.
- Our Outreach & Organizing Team also offers ongoing general workshop on tenant rights every month
- Our Tenant School Program provides in-depth multi-day workshops 3 times a year
Organize Tenants
- The Outreach & Organizing Team assists tenant groups challenging Above Guideline Rent Increases (AGI), evictions, landlords removing services and maintenance. They can also refer you to City-funded legal services for advice or representation.
- Our Tenant Association Organizers are available to meet with the Tenants in your building and can help you form a Tenants' Association
- Our Civic Engagement Coordinator can help you connect with the various ways to make laws and services better for tenants in Toronto and Ontario.
Campaign for Tenants' Rights
- Our Board of Directors runs advocacy activities of the FMTA. They meet with government at all levels to improve tenants' rights: Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), fair laws, and the enforcement of municipal standards
- We also inform the media about tenants' perspectives on issues and needs
