Key Deposit A property owner is allowed to ask you for a ‘key deposit’ before you move in. The key deposit may only be equal to the actual cost of replacing your keys. Key deposits also include magnetic or ‘card’ keys, which may be more expensive to replace than regular keys. A property owner can also require you to pay for additional keys or key cards or require you to pay for replacements if you lose your keys. Your key deposit must be returned to you when you move out.
